Grbl Shield as a Stepper Driver?

I was wondering if you can use the Gsheild as a standalone stepper driver. Like the motorsheilds? I want to make a 3-axis timelapse controller and G-Code and Serial commands arn't ideal. I want to control motors with an arduino sketch. Is there a way to command the DRv8811 chips from a sketch with maybe AccelStepper.h library? Grbl is more than I need
