    Hello,

Below is my Dropbox link where additional information can be found.

I salvaged from local school an older CNC (included frame, stepper motors and router). NEMA 34 stepper motors. I added TinyG controller.
Everything works fine except Axis Z.
After switching voltage and feed rate the motor just whines without move the the axis.

I am very new at this and would appreciate some assistance
Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide that would be helpful.
    Thank you,

    Calvin

Create a Parameter list ($$ command, copy to a text file) which will answer a few questions. Add that to your dropbox.
When you say Z axis mechanically moves smoothly, do you have a way of manually rotating the Z Stepper ?

One possibility is obviously a bad stepper.
Did you check A and B winding continuity with voltmeter?
So lets say the X stepper is working properly.
You could swap wires from the Z motor and the X motor at tinyG end, just to see if perhaps a driver is not functioning correctly on tinyG.

How many steppers are there, 3 or 4?
I can only see what looks like a stepper at end of gantry.

Yes I am able to move the axis manually with a drill.

On the Z motor I’m able to get continuity with pairs A and B

    I have only three steppers.

All drivers are good. Z Motor works (not works) the same using all drivers.

Firstly, good job at placing your expensive electronic device on an earthed metal conductor. Bonus points for magic smoke!

Second, have you adjusted the drivers power? Have you connected that stepper to a different axis? What happened when you did that?

I did switch drivers. Same effect.

Can you disconnect the Z motor from the load and check that you get same result unloaded?

    $$ listing would help maybe

I have a similar issue. Motor4 (my Z axis) will not move. If I switch the cable to another stepper, that new stepper will not move. I have verified that all four steppers work. I have also verified that all four cables/wires work. I’ve narrowed it down to that particular motor/axis on the board. I have tried adjusting the pot (carefully), to no avail.
What other thoughts do you have? If we decide it’s a bad board, I’m less than an hour away and would appreciate if I could just swap the board out in person vs shipping back and forth.

    Thanks much.

I figured out my issue. It was the Travel per Revolution ($4tr in my case). It was set to 360000. The others were all 1.2500. Once I changed that, it worked as it should. This value either persisted after I ran the factory default command ($defa=1), meaning the factory default doesn’t change that setting or more worrisome, that that is the default value.

Either way, I’m back in business.

That is why I suggested a $$ listing.

Good to hear your are up and running.
    Interesting looking machine, Happy Milling
