I’m about to commit to a retrofiting an old CNC router with new controls. TinyG is my preferred option, but since the steppers require 4.7 A, I’ll need external drivers.

At least one person has claimed success with CW5045 and Gecko 210x drivers. I’m looking at a Leadshine MX3660 (datasheet) but am nervous about it being compatible with the TinyG. It requires a step pulse of 2.5 microseconds and a signal voltage of 3.3 to 5V, so it looks good. But maybe I’m missing something.

I have not tried any external drivers yet, but this thread

reports measure pulse widths of 4us with tinyG FW 438.02, so that part of the puzzle should work for you.

Wouldn’t you be better off using a driver, rather than a controller?

cmcgrath5035: Yup. I’ve studied that thread. Makes me feel a little safer.

Zootalaws: What do you mean? The Leadshine MX3660 is just three drivers in one unit… Isn’t it?

It is – I thought it was a controller, as it has PWM, stop switches, end stops, etc.

But… it uses a DB-25 connector. Wiring it to the TinyG would be a real pain.

The M542/M550 would be an easy install.

I don’t see a connection for the per-driver Enable signals.
That may or may not be important in your application.
