I just unpacked my second TinyG and thought I would check the status – it’s been a few months since it arrived and it could have been out of date by now…

$sys gave me (among other things):

    [fb] firmware build 438.02
    [fv] firmware version 0.97
    [hp] hardware platform 1.00
    [hv] hardware version 8.00

So, along I trot to the downloads page – where I am informed that 438.02 is the EDGE branch. Looking back to the ‘firmware update’ page on the wiki, it tells me:

    “Edge Branch

The second branch is the edge branch. The edge branch should not be used in production! This branch is used to test upcoming features and possible bug fixes.”

So, should I downgrade it to 380.08 for serious cutting?

There are numerous bug fixes and enhancements accumulated into build 438.02.

I think I would run some test cuts with your serious Gcode with FW 438.02.

On the other hand, if your first tinyG is performing for you, then perhaps your projects don’t intersect with the fixed bugs.

Both my TinyGs are the same – bought at the same time – I was just mucking around after I put the BT module on and thought I would see whether I could do maintenance under BT – like upgrading firmware, etc.

As far as I am aware, nothing I have tried to date has resulted in an error.

The point I was making was that the Wiki says to not use the edge branch for production, but the shipping units have the edge branch loaded. Either the wiki needs a better explanation or the shipping units should ship with ‘production’ code.

I imagine I am not alone in not checking the isntalled version vs releases right off.

It’s not a criticism, it was meant as a question because the wiki is clear that you are inviting armageddon should you use the edge branch 😉

It’s past time to move the edge branch to Master. Edge is fine and recommended at this point. At that point edge will become more “edgy” as we introduce new functionality.
