I am trying to cut out a HDPE gear. As it cuts, I can see I did not take my hold down into account when I set the maximum depth. In CoolTerm, I hit the cancel button, which I assume stops sending gcode to tinyg. Once the buffer is empty, the CNC machine stops. I issue a G0Z0 to bring the cutter 17mm straight up.
Instead, tinyg issues a Y1Z0! That means my machine tries to move 180 mm toward Y0, which it can’t do because the cutter is 17 mm down a hole, and the cutting edge is only 8 mm high. So Y stalls until the cutter is high enough to start cutting again, then rips through my workpiece, destroying yet more material. Ever price a two pound block of HDPE? What if it were aluminum?
In the most pleasant terms possible, why would Coolterm/TinyG do this? There are no Y1 instructions in my gcode anywhere.

January 26, 2014 at 7:23 pm #5259tomking505MemberIt happened again just now, to a piece I have worked on for seven hours.
I sent the gcode below to TinyG via CoolTerm. Halfway through, I hit the cancel button, because I wanted to restart. After the buffer cleared, the machine came to a halt.
I pressed the return key. The machine bolted in the Y direction, putting a scar in the workpiece and breaking the bit.
If the buffer wasn’t clear, why did the machine stop? If it was clear, why the Y0 command?
Below is the gcode, and below that are the settings.

January 26, 2014 at 7:37 pm #5260tomking505MemberCoolTerm is set according to this page:
https://github.com/synthetos/TinyG/wiki/TinyG-Sending-Files-with-CoolTerm
XON is turned on in CoolTerm and in TinyG.
January 26, 2014 at 9:54 pm #5264aldenMemberThanks for sending the data. I will try to reproduce what happened. In the meantime if you need to clear out the buffers I think you may need to close the coolterm window and open a new one to make sure there is no more in coolterm’s buffer. Also hit the reset button on the TinyG.
Pls give me a day or so to get to run this.
January 27, 2014 at 3:00 am #5266psykoMemberKeep in mind that Coolterm is simply a terminal.
If you cancel in the middle of a line, when CR/LF is not send, I think the data will stay in the Serial buffer because TinyG didn’t encounter the end of command token (new line char). Then you send g0z0. In TinyG serial buffer, this leads to the following line :
y1g0z0\r\nwhich is assumed to be a motion I guess. That might be one explanation, but the line you gave is not the same as my guess.
I’m not sure that there is a command to flush the serial buffer in TinyG. ‘%’ will only clear the planner buffer. But I’m simply a user, alden will confirm or deny what I’m saying.
January 27, 2014 at 7:21 am #5267aldenMember@psyko – You are essentially correct. But I’m not sure why Tom’s getting that movement in Y; at least not that particular move that goes to 180. What I was going to do with the code is (1) confirm proper operation of the Gcode file as a start (and generate line numbers so it’s easier to debug), (2) reproduce Tom’s steps to see how Y movement might occur, and (3) see if I can come up with a procedure / documentation for stopping and restarting a job under coolterm – albeit probably restarting from the beginning.

January 27, 2014 at 10:03 am #5273tomking505MemberThank you, Psyko and Alden, for your help.
What has me puzzled is the Y0 move. There aren’t any in the gcode. It goes to a coordinate that is not in my gcode, which is what causes the crash.
Maybe the command “X88 Y99” is halted midway through to give “X88 Y9”? I don’t have anything that will sniff the com port to see.
I would gladly use TGfx, but I cannot update my firmware to something compatible with TGfx.
January 27, 2014 at 11:09 am #5280aldenMemberLet me get through the diagnosis and see what we can (and cannot) do with Coolterm. Separately we are qualifying the Edge branch and making sure it works well and works with tgfx. I don’t have an estimate for when this will be finished, but this is what we are working on so it should not be long. Beyond that we’ll make sure you can get your firmware upgraded when the time comes.
January 27, 2014 at 6:32 pm #5286aldenMemberTom, when you said you hit the cancel button do you mean “Disconnect” on Coolterm? If not, what did you hit to cancel?
January 27, 2014 at 7:04 pm #5287mcgyvrMemberoh wait.. “Y1” isn’t the cancel shortcut in coolterm? shoot 🙂 haha 🙂
January 27, 2014 at 10:20 pm #5288tomking505Member>Tom, when you said you hit the cancel button
After you use send text file from the connection menu, CoolTerm displays a progress dialog which shows how much of the file has been sent. That dialog has a “cancel” button in the lower right.
Not the disconnect button. I never use the disconnect button; I have CoolTerm set to connect/disconnect automatically.
Most of the time, the machine runs until the buffer is empty. And it’s done. I can issued gocde manually or send another file, no problem. But one time in ten, something goes wrong and the machine erupts. Sometimes nothing displays in the CoolTerm window. Other times it will show five or six lines of gcode. The problem is it is intermittent.
This is CoolTerm windows, 1.4.3. XON is on.

January 27, 2014 at 10:35 pm #5290aldenMemberHmmm. I see the transmit dialog for as long as Coolterm is reading the file form the disk, then it disappears, but that’s usually well before the motion stops. I think Coolterm is filling it’s buffers, then once they are filled that dialog goes away. Thanks for the clarification.
Hey, If you have that cambam gear file that cut the bad arc I’d really like to see that one. If TinyG is messing up and cutting an arc in that gear we need to fix that. I have not seen that kind of behavior in a very long time, but if something’s lurking there we need to nail it. If we don;t see it, then it points to something else that we should be tracking down. The fact that it’s repeatable in your setup gives me hope that we can reproduce it and find the source of the problem.
January 28, 2014 at 2:53 am #5292psykoMemberHello guys,
Now that I read that arc issue, I sometime do have it as well.
I always assumed it was some kind of heating problem, or some issue with my control software.
I figured out that my software have issues with filling the planner buffer, but it is sending the command properly.
Unfortunately I do not have any GCode or data to provide but I noticed this behavior several times.Hope you can identify the issue.
January 28, 2014 at 5:42 am #5295aldenMember@psyko – What build are you running? We did a lot of work on arcs after build 380.xx. These changes are being staged through edge right now. If that error still exists I’d like to find and fix it. If you have any files that you know perform this can you please make them available (dropbox or some other link, presumably) — Thanks
