    Any thoughts on why COM port not showing up when connecting computer to TinyG with USB cable?

    Some symptoms:
    COM port doesn’t show up when connecting.
    Flashed tinyg hex file on board multiple times using AVRISP mkII.
    When bluetooth dongle connected to tinyg I can find multiple instances of “Bluetooth Peripheral Device” in Device Manager, but they are not very helpful.
    CoolTerm picks up the BPDs and seems to be able to connect to one, but there’s no communication.
    When BT dongle not connected, nothing shows up in Device Manager.
    COM port shows up fine for an Arduino, same cable.

    Would a problem with the ft230x explain this? Worth checking? Best way to check?

    Since you specify COM port, should we assume you are running some version of Windows?

    Just curious – why are you connecting a Bluetooth dongle to tinyG?
    I have seen not a statement that tinyG is capable of working with a USB connected Bluetooth, but then I have neither seen that it is not.

    Another thought – are you sure that the FTDI driver is available on your PC? TinyG uses a FTDI USB chip, I believe

    I’ve connected both ways many times before. Perhaps something happened to the driver?

    “5 Troubleshooting
    5.1 Windows 7 cannot find drivers for my device
    This error can occur if the VID and PID programmed into the device EEPROM do not match those listed in
    the INF files for the driver. The VID and PID programmed into the device EEPROM may be found by using
    the USBView utility from the FTDI web site. These can then be checked against the VID and PID entries
    in the driver INF files. If they do not match, that driver cannot be installed for that device without either
    re-programming the device EEPROM or modifying the list of VID and PID numbers in the INF files.
    Please note that only your own company VID and PID or FTDI’s VID (0x0403) and FTDI PID issued for
    use by the customer should be used in the EEPROM and INF files.”

    nwags,

    Hi there. So lets set the bluetooth aside and focus only on the USB port on the v8. Dumb stuff first. Do you hear the sound like a board was detected? Does anything show up in control panel? Like a yellow ? device? What about the USB cable. Does this cable work with the arduino?

    Lets get that out of the way first.

    Without bluetooth… Nothing showing up. USB cable works with Arduino. I used the USB View utility from ftdi. It seems to work despite not officially being compatible with windows 7. Arduino device shows up on it when connected, but nothing shows up for tinyg.

    UPDATE: Got new board, #725. Right away this one loads drivers (USB Serial Converter & USB Serial Port) and works with CoolTerm. Not sure what happened to board #2.
