    Hi,

    I have a grblshield v3 that came with an arduino uno as part of the shapeoko kit I ordered. I recently extended my makerslides & doubled my X-axis so that I can cut 3′ x 3′ material.

    After the upgrade, I plugged the grblshield into the power supply, but the gcodesender software can’t open the port. I noticed 2 things: the blue power LED is blinking (quite fast), and the Y-axis controller chip got so hot that I burned my finger when I touched it.

    I’ve tested the power supply with no load and verified 24 volts. What I find odd is that the entire rig was working fine before the upgrade to increase the size.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’d like to start cutting some larger projects, but I’m stuck at the moment. What does the blinking power LED signify?

    Sorry for the delayed response. There’s nothing on the board that should cause the PS (blue) light to blink – I suspect the PS is collapsing. Please try the following: Disconnect your motors. Turn the current pots all the way down. Try again. If the blue light is constant then connect the motors – possibly one by one. Try the power again. Then gradually up the motor current; one by one.

    What might be happening is that the current draw is large enough that one (or more) of the stepper drivers is going into thermal shut down. In this case the thermal can oscillate – sometimes quite fast. If the power supply is not adequate it could be collapsing and causing the blue light to run off when the voltage collapses. You can check this with a Voltmeter or scope.

    What kind of power supply are you using, and what is the voltage and current rating?

    Also, please make sure none of the motor wire ends are touching traces on the board. THis can happen if you are not careful on the Y axis, in particular.

    Lastly, are you sure you have a v3 board? we have not shipped those in a long time. What color is the board – green or blue?

    Yes this sounds like thermal shutdown. I would just add that the trim pots are very “fragile” so be careful not to over torque the pots while adjusting.

    HI
    I’m using a grbl sheild and when the data is sent to it, the green light flashes and the power is also reaching the motors. But i don’t understand why the motors are not rotating! Can anyone help me out through this?

    I just plugged my GRBL v3 in tonight and my blue power light was blinking on and off fairly fast as well.
    After trouble shooting for a minute I realized that my 24V power supply was cycling on/off and only putting out 3V. Luckily I found another power supply around the house that is about the same and I’m back up and running.
    I know this is a few months late… but it wasn’t until tonight that I started having this problem and looked for a solution.
