I bought this SSR relay to be used with TinyG:

    View post on imgur.com

The idea is that I have one controlling the spindle (at 120v) and one controlling a vacuum (at 12v).

    For the spindle:

The spindle is connected 1 and 2 of the relay, while 3 is connected to SPIN and 4 is connected to GND.

When I activate the M code necessary to start the Spindle on, the light barely lights up on the relay, but doesn’t turn on the spindle. I did a voltage reading over the relay and it reads about 2.9v. Hmm..

For the fun of it, I unconnected the TinyG controller from the SSR relay and attached the 24v supply directly to the INPUT of the relay. That turns the relay on perfectly.

What did I do wrong? Did I (gasp) get the relay polarity backwards? I could use some guidance!

I would like to point out that I have TinyG revision v8 board.

The (logic level, straight from the microcontroller) output from TinyG can’t supply the current the relay needs. You need a relay driver.

I would like to check this out further if I may. I traveling (NYC Makerfaire) and won’t be back until late next week but will look into this further then.

Although.. if I buy one of those.. those seem to support the 120v AC that I need to control the spindle (the spindle is what, around 6 amps @ 120v).

So I don’t need the big SSR I linked to previously?

I had the same problem..some of the 3V rated SSR’s don’t switch consistently with this board.

You can just use a transistor/suitable base resistor as a driver for the SSR..
Any NPN should be fine (tip102/2n2222)
    And a flyback diode 1n4001
just like this (substitute relay with ssr input side) and use the input voltage to the tinyg board as vcc (assuming its not over the ssr input spec..I didn’t look)

    Here’s the thing I don’t get..

Synthetos is SELLING the relay (or one very close to it) and saying it’s as easy as hooking it up directly to the Spindle Control Output.

    What gives?

Im sorry it’s not working and we need to fix this. Please give me a chance to look into this and find a solution. This is going to be hard for the next 7 days or so given the Makerfaire travel and some other things that are happening jn the days that follow. We’d like to get this resolved.

Oh sorry Alden, I didn’t know you were actually a admin/employee of Synthetos.. my mistake.

TinyG is awesome btw, I just wish it was turnkey complete.

I’m building my very first cnc machine so I was hoping it was almost plug ‘n play. The JSON stuff goes a long way in my plans for my own machine so that’s why I bought a TinyG. Great stuff!

The lack of software documentation I am used to.. I delve into code.. it’s just the hardware that is.. relatively new to me.

Just let me know when you can.. I am working on other parts of my machine until then.

Hmm.. when Coolant is ON, there is NO voltage difference between GND and Coolant.. but when OFF, there IS a voltage difference between GND and Coolant.

I think it’s the exact opposite logic.

I am not sure about it.. just adding what I have observed.

Like I said, I am not the best with electronics so any clarification from any user who has got it to work would be appreciated.

I now understand why this new 12v 2 channel relay is acting the opposite of the desired result.

Alden, I will make another post to discuss a request for an enhancement to the TinyG firmware and explain it in more detail because this topic was for the original SSR undervoltage problem. I no longer care about those big SSRs but instead now focus on this 2 relay driver here:

Like I said, I will make a new post explaining my logic and formally asking for a new feature.

Thanks for your efforts on this – I already responded to your feature request post. I am still not back at my bench to test out the Fotek SSR issue you had – should be able to check this out over the weekend. I’d like to get some closure on that as well.

I’ll take any solution, even if I need to buy a new relay.

Just tell me what will work and I’ll buy it.. I bought a few relays.. some just can’t get enough current and others are.. inverted for one reason or the other.

But like I said, I’ll get something rush shipment on ebay if I can get a model number that works.

Is there any update to my situation?

I went ahead and bought -another- relay directly from Synthetos.. the idea is that THAT exact one that they are selling should work with TinyG.. but then again, the other 4 that I have should work as well..

For now, I bypass the relay.. but I’d -really- love for my SSR to turn off and on the spindle. That’d save me a lot of manual mucking about.
